A casual blog about my life.

Walking With a Smile

Yesterday was the first nice day of spring. I decided that after work I would take a walk down to the local cannabis shop. The first step is always the hardest, it signifies change, and change is hard. Well, it can be. I’ve been wrestling with my weight for quite some time now. Coming out on the other side of depression from losing my mom and the new (more sedentary) position at work has made it very easy to pack on the pounds.

My partner and I have decided to make a plan next year and do a semi-big trip west. I’ve always wanted to see the Rockies. And experience California, at least once. See what San Francisco has to offer up and visit a legit leather shop. I’m likely to go into debt there. We’ll finish up the trip in the Pacific Northwest where he’s from and I’ll get to experience his hometown for the first time. Something he’s been very enthusiastic about sharing with me. This trip has motivated me to make a big change and become more conscience about what I’m putting into my body and make exercise a routine.

Back to my walk yesterday, I decided that day that when I got home, there was literally no excuse for me not to walk down into town from my house. We live right outside the city limits but the shoulders on the highway are nice and wide and then about half a mile, there’s sidewalk.

It seems like everyone walking/running was in a good mood. Smiles, greetings, and waves. Even a honk from a coworker/friend that recognized me on the side of the road. It made for a relaxing and easygoing stroll. It made me feel very fortunate to live in a small town with small town attitudes. Nobody was in a hurry, and if you’re going to live in a rural town, you’ve got to be prepared for that. It can be aggravating when you just want some McDonalds, but it takes much longer than you think it should, but that’s the way it is. So, if you need service at the drop of a hat, you won’t be satisfied here.

It was nice to take a break from the daily worries. The economy, property tax hike, homelessness problem, it all seemed to dissolve for the hour I took a stroll in town. I think I need more of this. Unfortunately, with the weather forecast calling for more winter weather, I may have to hit pause until we visit Montreal for the solar eclipse next weekend. I’ll get plenty of exercise then.
